Prices
Quotes are provided on an individual basis, because the requirements of your work are unique. Prices are dependent on the amount of editing required, word count, and your required turnaround time.
I don't charge by the word, because a piece with fewer words does not always mean less work (e.g. a document that is very technical or in need of heavy editing will take more time).
I charge a cancellation fee of 50% if the work is agreed, and subsequently withdrawn.
Copyediting
Copyediting is charged at £30 an hour. The number of words I am able to edit per hour varies depending on the complexity of the text, but as a guide it is usually 1000-2000 words per hour.
Proofreading
Proofreading is also charged at £30 an hour, but I can usually complete this faster than copyediting (approximately 2000-3000 words per hour).
A few factors can affect the speed of proofreading, such as proofreading using PDF, if your document has a complex structure, or if English is not your first language.
Audio transcription
For 1 speaker (dictation, podcast): £1 per audio minute
For standard 2 speaker recordings (interviews): £1.50 per audio minute
Prices increase at 50p per additional speaker, as these recordings (group discussions, focus groups, meetings) are much more time consuming to transcribe.
There are a number of factors that can have an impact on the time this service can take. For example, if there is a lot of background noise, or the overall quality of the recording is poor, very quiet, or muffled, it will take more time.
